Generative engine optimization (GEO)
Showing up in AI search
When a homeowner asks ChatGPT for the best foundation contractor in town, two or three names come back. The contractor named gets the call. The contractor not named gets nothing. This is how to be on that list.
Search is splitting in two. The first half is the Google you have known for twenty years: type something, get ten blue links, click one. The second half is the answer ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overview gives when someone asks an open question. The second half is growing fast, and it is changing how homeowners find contractors, designers, and specialists for the first time in two decades.
Getting cited in those AI answers is a different discipline from traditional SEO. It overlaps with SEO heavily, but the signals that move it are different enough that a service business doing only SEO will lose the next decade of new-customer searches to competitors who run both.
Most agencies do not understand AI search yet. The ones who claim to mostly resell SEO with a buzzword markup. The work that actually moves AI citations is concrete and learnable. The guides below cover what it is, where it differs from regular SEO, and how to sequence the work over six months.
What we cover here
Three overlapping ways search now works. Regular SEO (Google's blue links) is still the foundation that AI engines pull from. Answer engine optimization is the layer that wins voice search and featured snippets at the top of Google. AI search optimization is the new layer that gets you cited inside the synthesized answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews.
Each guide below picks one specific question and answers it directly, with the steps to implement what it covers. Nothing theoretical. The work is on-page content, structured data, and brand authority, and most of it is in reach of any team that already takes SEO seriously.
Why now
ChatGPT crossed 800 million weekly users in 2026 and has rolled out web search to nearly every account. Perplexity is past 500 million monthly queries. Google's AI Overviews appear on roughly 18% of US searches and the share keeps rising. Voice search through Siri and Alexa has reached around 20% of certain query categories.
When a homeowner researches a $30,000 project, the first round of vetting now happens through AI. By the time they reach Google, they have a shortlist. By the time they call, they have decided. The contractor named in the first answer wins outsized share. The contractor not named gets cut from the list before the buyer even searches.
The first contractors to do this work in any market lock in citation patterns that compound. The next wave plays catch-up against entrenched incumbents. The same thing happened with regular SEO between 2003 and 2008, and the contractors who skipped it then are still paying the cost in 2026.
